Updates and recovery
SRS stores the application and your personal configuration separately:
- Application:
C:\Program Files\IL2-SimpleRadio-Standalone - User data:
%AppData%\IL2-SRS
Updating or reinstalling the application does not normally remove your profiles, controls, favourites, radio presets, or window settings.
Before an update or repair
Section titled “Before an update or repair”- Close IL-2 Great Battles, IL-2 Korea, and any dedicated server instance.
- Close the SRS client and server.
- If you have a configuration you cannot afford to lose, make a backup of
%AppData%\IL2-SRS.
To open the user-data folder, press Win+R, enter %AppData%\IL2-SRS, and select OK.
Update to the latest stable release
Section titled “Update to the latest stable release”- Download the stable Auto Updater.
- Run it and accept the Windows administrator prompt.
- Keep the recommended installation folder when the installer opens.
- Start SRS and confirm the version shown in the title bar or status bar.
The Auto Updater closes running SRS components, downloads the latest stable package, runs its installer, and restarts the client after a successful automatic update.
If the updater repeatedly offers the same release and the client title still shows an older version, run the latest stable Auto Updater again. The current installer removes an obsolete DCS-SR-Common.dll that could override the bundled client version. If it still loops, use the full ZIP repair steps below and include installer-log.txt when reporting the problem. Your settings in %AppData%\IL2-SRS are not removed.
Install or continue testing a beta
Section titled “Install or continue testing a beta”Open GitHub Releases, select the required release marked Pre-release, and download its attached Auto Updater or full ZIP package.
Enable Settings → Check for beta updates if you want the client to notify you about later beta builds. Disabling this setting stops beta notifications; it does not replace an installed beta with the stable version.
Return from beta to stable
Section titled “Return from beta to stable”If the installed beta is newer than the latest stable release, the Auto Updater will not downgrade it. Use the stable full package instead:
- Back up
%AppData%\IL2-SRSand close IL-2 and SRS. - Open the latest stable release.
- Download the ZIP asset whose name begins with
IL2-SimpleRadioStandalone. - Extract the complete ZIP to a temporary folder.
- Run
installer.exefrom that folder and install toC:\Program Files\IL2-SimpleRadio-Standalone. - Start SRS and disable Check for beta updates.
Your AppData configuration remains in place, although settings introduced only by a newer beta may not be understood by an older stable client.
Repair a missing or damaged installation
Section titled “Repair a missing or damaged installation”Use the full ZIP package when the Auto Updater cannot run, files are missing, or SRS no longer starts:
- Download the required stable or beta ZIP from GitHub Releases.
- Extract every file to a temporary folder. Do not run the installer from inside the ZIP.
- Run
installer.exeas administrator. - Install to the recommended Program Files folder.
- Start SRS and run Help → Telemetry Diagnostics.
Do not delete %AppData%\IL2-SRS as part of a normal repair. The installer also detects older duplicate installations and can consolidate their user data before retiring known program files from those locations.
Recover settings
Section titled “Recover settings”Restore your own backup
Section titled “Restore your own backup”- Close SRS.
- Rename the current
%AppData%\IL2-SRSfolder so it remains available as a safety copy. - Restore the backed-up
IL2-SRSfolder to%AppData%. - Start SRS and verify the selected profile, controls, audio devices, and favourites.
Check migration backups
Section titled “Check migration backups”When the installer consolidates legacy or duplicate installations, it stores dated backups under %AppData%\IL2-SRS\MigrationBackups.
Keep the current folder backed up before restoring individual configuration files from one of these folders.
Recover from a corrupted global.cfg
Section titled “Recover from a corrupted global.cfg”If SRS cannot parse global.cfg, it creates global.cfg.bak and starts with default global settings. Preserve both files before attempting recovery. Control profiles are stored in separate .cfg files and may still be usable even when the global configuration is damaged.
Recover IL-2 startup.cfg
Section titled “Recover IL-2 startup.cfg”SRS maintains startup.cfg.il2srs.lastgood beside each structurally valid IL-2 startup.cfg. If the game configuration becomes missing, empty, or incomplete, SRS will not add telemetry settings to the damaged file. With IL-2 closed, SRS offers to restore the most recent valid backup and preserves the damaged file with an .il2srs.damaged-...bak name.
The original startup.cfg.il2srs.bak created before SRS’s first telemetry change remains available as a fallback. A restored older backup may not contain the latest game settings, so review graphics and sound options after recovery.
If no usable backup exists, close SRS, move the damaged startup.cfg out of the game’s data folder, start and close IL-2 once so the game can recreate it, then run Help → Telemetry Diagnostics to restore the SRS telemetry endpoint.
Reset SRS configuration
Section titled “Reset SRS configuration”Use this only when reinstalling the application did not solve a configuration problem:
- Close SRS.
- Rename
%AppData%\IL2-SRSto a backup name such asIL2-SRS-old. - Start SRS to create a clean configuration.
- Reconfigure audio and test the client before restoring anything from the old folder.
This reset affects profiles, bindings, favourites, presets, and window settings. It does not uninstall SRS.
Uninstall SRS
Section titled “Uninstall SRS”- Download and extract a full release ZIP.
- Run
installer.exe. - Select Remove.
The removal process leaves %AppData%\IL2-SRS available for a future reinstall. For a completely fresh removal, delete that folder manually only after confirming that its backup is no longer needed.
If recovery still fails
Section titled “If recovery still fails”Use Help → Report a Problem and include clientlog.txt from the SRS application folder. For installation failures, also include installer-log.txt from the folder where the installer was run.
